The Onça Pintada Photography Award is an initiative of the Federal District Government, through the Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy, in partnership with production company Leo Matos and the University of Brasília’s Faculty of Planaltina (FUP), made possible by the Culture Support Fund (FAC). In its inaugural edition, the project brings together artistic practice, academic knowledge, and civil society to democratize access to culture throughout the Federal District.

The exhibition brings together the perspective of Federal District-based photographers, who document the essence and materiality of the region’s parks and protected areas, along with its Integrated Development Region (RIDE). The images move through landscape representation, the symbiosis between humans and their environment, and the exuberance of the Cerrado’s flora and fauna, within the tradition of ecological photography.

By bringing environmental conservation and art history together, in step with the eco-art movement, the award stands as a manifesto for free expression and for the urgent preservation of the biome — a concept that guided the visual identity developed for the project.

Promoted by the University of Brasília’s Dean’s Office of Extension (DEX/UnB) and funded by the Foundation for Scientific and Technological Enterprises (FINATEC), the Visual Identity Design Competition for the University of Brasília’s Memory Space (MemoUnB) was held to select the official brand for the institution’s new cultural space, dedicated to preserving university memory and extension projects.

The main inspiration for the visual identity was the SG-10 building itself, a historic structure on the Darcy Ribeiro Campus designed by Oscar Niemeyer. The building served as the architect’s own workspace and housed CEPLAN before becoming a memorial.

The visual identity’s graphic system drew on Lelé’s precast concrete elements, the play of shadows, and the interaction between concrete and organic form. MemoUnB was conceived as a hub for gathering memories and fostering research, teaching, and extension activities integrated with both the academic community and the public. Its goal is to become a national reference point for the preservation, communication, and study of university history, and the brand was developed to be institutional, inviting, contemporary, and modular.

In addition to a complete visual identity — including typography, color palettes, logos, textures, and patterns — the competition called for a generative brand. With that in mind, we developed a supporting caption system with its own alphabet that renews itself with each activity or action promoted by MemoUnB.
